Government, Regulatory, & Industry Standards Agencies

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)  Its mission is to enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity.

American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA)  It is the U.S. transportation construction industry's representative in Washington, D.C. Its mission: advocating strong federal investment in the nation's transportation infrastructure to meet public demand for a safe and efficient business transportation network

Canadian Standards Association (CSA)  It is a not-for-profit membership-based association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace.

International Organization for Standardisation (ISO)  The source of ISO 9000 and more than 13,000 International Standards for business, government and society.

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)  Its mission is to carry out the Federal highway programs in partnership with the State and local agencies to meet the Nation's transportation needs.

Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) This document defines the standards used by road managers nationwide to install and maintain traffic control devices on all streets and highways. The MUTCD is published by the FHWA. The MUTCD audience includes the insurance industry, law enforcement agencies, academic institutions, private industry, and construction and engineering concerns. 

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)  Its mission is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by developing and advocating scientifically based consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)  Under the U.S. Department of Transportation, it was established to carry out safety programs under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Highway Safety Act. NHTSA is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes.

Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)  Its mission is to save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of America's workers.

Transportation Research Board (TRB)  Its mission—one of six major divisions of the National Research Council—is to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research.

U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)  Its mission is to serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system.
